Pre-formed ponds are great for
smaller areas, where forming a shape using a flexible liner would create
numerous folds which could look unsightly. The following ideas show a few
different installation techniques from a sunken informal finish to a raised
formal pool complete with a gazebo!
 |
An informally shaped
pre-formed pond is an ideal habitat for plenty of wildlife and plants along with
a few fish. The edging has been informally laid, using natural stone cemented
down, with pebbles filling in the gaps, and creating a beached area around the
pool which softens its appearance. The pond has been installed with a small
fountain for effect which assists with the circulation and thus the oxygenation
of the pond.

| This pre-formed pond has been
installed using a traditional crazy paving edge, ideal for ponds around a patio
area. Having a step up to the pond is always desirable for safety reasons and it
will also reduce surface water washing in, thus lessening the risk of pollution.
This pond, along with good planting, has a beautiful jug installed which uses a
submersible pool pump to gently pour water into the pond, again circulating and
oxygenating the water effectively.

Here a round pre-formed pond
has been installed within a circular wall leaving a planting area between the
pond and wall for shrubs, climbers and bedding plants. The whole feature has
then been covered with a gazebo adding another dimension to the feature. A
formal fountain has been installed as a final touch. |
Basic Rules for Pre-formed
Pools
-
Never position a pool in a
area where there is a high water table or flash flooding.
-
Pre-formed pools must have
all round support, ensure you have created a sand bed for the pool to sit on
and pack sand down between the excavation and the pool sides.
-
Take care over ensuring
your pool is level (see Level Edging)
-
Allow the filled pond to
settle for at least a week, then recheck levels before placing any edging
around the pool.
-
With raised pre-formed
ponds it is best to use a dry sand / cement mix (6/1 mix) between the
pool’s side and supporting walls.
