Informal Pools
When constructing informal ponds your imagination
and budget are the only real limiting factors whilst adhering to the basic rules
of pond design already covered.
Informal pools give limitless scope to incorporate many different design
features and textures into your water garden. Many different man made and
natural materials can be used in the construction of your feature including
decking, stone, walling, cobbles and sleepers......
As can be seen in the example opposite the use of natural rockery and walling
stone enables a series of pools and waterfalls to blend in the natural planting
of the rockery.

INFORMAL Pools – Basic Rules
- Careful planning of planting areas, depth and
filtration methods.
- Underlay should be used at all times to
protect from sharp stones or roots.
- Where stones, walling, rocks or other heavy
materials etc. are going to be placed on a liner, use underlay over the
liner as well.
- If pools and waterfalls join, ensure the
liners overlap, with higher liner on top of the lower liner.
- Do not place rocks or walling around the liner
until the pool has been filled with water and left for a few days. You may
remove some water later to carry out this work.
- Do not build a pool in a high water table area
or areas prone to flooding.
